It has been a minute since the last time that I posted. Nothing crazy happened for the rest of May. My rotating schedule took hold of life and didn’t leave me a lot of time for the essentials. Had my games during my early shifts and futzed around with one of the actual play’s edits. In the end, everything got where it needed to go. Things were discussed regarding the formation of some LLCs that have since been filed. Still have more paperwork for all of that. Overnights finished off the rest of May and into the beginning of June.
On the second of June, my partner and I went out to celebrate our thirteenth wedding anniversary. It was really cool. We went out for dinner at a really nice Portuguese restaurant, and the food and drinks were amazing. The restaurant didn’t have individual tables; it was communal seating, and we got to sit at the kitchen window to watch the chefs do their thing. It was an awesome experience, and had I not been scheduled to work, I would’ve had more to drink. The bar’s Tom Collinses were dangerous.
Over the course of the long weekend I had, a perk of the rotating schedule, I got to play multiple games of D&D, see a concert down in Boston, and celebrate my 39th birthday by getting hammered and then playing more D&D. The games were fun and eating and drinking at our favorite local spot was amazing but I truly enjoyed going to see Covet, Lite, and Hikes down in Boston. It was a sold-out show in a small venue, all of the bands are math rock bands, and it was really cool to see the various versions of what would be considered Math Rock.
For instance, Hikes is probably what would be considered your stereotypical Math Rock band. Midwest Emo guitar riffs, but with varying tempos and time signatures. I’m not an expert on Midwest Emo, so tough shit if I described it differently than what you feel like it is. And to be fair, American Football is considered both Midwest Emo and Math Rock, so *shrug*. Lite was something else entirely. They were from Japan and were just full of frenetic energy. The best way I could describe their music is like a heavier and faster version of the French band Totorro. Now, Covet is a band that I’ve been following for several years. Fronted by Yvette Yung, a fantastic guitarist and seemingly all-around wonderful person. I say “seemingly” because I’ve never met the lady. But the current lineup of the band is all female and all badass. Their brand of Math Rock is still like Midwest Emo, but if it had a lovechild with Shoegaze, with the accompaniment of varying instruments that you don’t see coming. They had a violinist play with them in Boston, but I also saw that a Sax player was playing with them in Chicago.
Outside of the crush of the crowd and the long drive home, the concert was one of my favorite shows in recent memory. It was kinda funny when we got to the venue and saw the line down the street to get in. My partner was like, “That can’t be for the show, right?” and I replied, “Covet is a lot more popular than you think.” She couldn’t wrap her head around one of the bands that I wanted to go see, being fairly big. And in her defense, just about every show that I’ve asked her to join me, the crowds have been small, and she’s never heard of the band. Back to the grind. Maybe I’ll record a video this month.
